INEC Chairman, Yakubu Mahmood, Summoned to Testify in Atiku's Petition Against Tinubu
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood, is scheduled to make an appearance before the Presidential Election Petition Court on Thursday, June 15. This comes as part of a petition lodged by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who contests the declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President.
Professor Yakubu Mahmood has been issued a subpoena by Atiku's legal team, headed by Chris Uche. During his court appearance, Mahmood is expected to provide testimony regarding the conduct of the disputed Presidential election and present pertinent documents in support of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate.
Although the specifics of these documents were not disclosed by Uche, their relevance to the case is anticipated. In a recent court session, Atiku's legal team called upon their first key witness, Dr. Alex Adum Ter, a lawyer and former Attorney General of Benue State.
Dr. Ter made allegations that the presidential election was marred by irregularities and failed to adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. As the National Coordinator of the Situation Room for the PDP during the February 25 presidential election, Dr. Ter submitted three video clips as evidence.
These clips featured statements from Mahmood and INEC's Commissioner in charge of Voter Education, Mr. Festus Okoye, assuring Nigerians that the presidential election results would be transmitted electronically to ensure credibility and transparency.
Despite objections raised by Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Justice Tsammani admitted the video clips and other supporting documents as exhibits, which were subsequently played in the open court. The hearing on the petition will resume on June 14.
